Title: Cloisonne Bottle with deer
Post by: marcos on March 21, 2016, 11:38:18 am
Dear All,

Just sharing a nice cloisonne bottle. It measures 5.5 cm.

I believe the deer jumping over the lotus under a parasol tree is a rebus for spring.

Regards,

Marcos

Hi Mracos,

Its a quite attractive, but it appears to be a contemporary bottle which was made in the later 20th C.

Best!

Steven

Dear Marcos,

I must say, I agree with Steven. A very beautiful example of a modern cloisonné bottle,
though I would date it from 1960s to 2000.
Best,
Joey

Hi Marcos,

Yes, an attractive bottle. Thanks for sharing.

I agree with Joey's dating. The technical quality on these 20th century bottles is often superior to the older ones, as they are able to control the firing processes much better now.

By the way, is there another name for parasol tree? It looks a lot like a type we have in Thailand.

Tom

Hi Guys,

Thank you for your comments.

Hi Tom,

I believe the Chinese Parasol tree (Firmiana Simplex) or wu tong, is also called Phoenix Tree as it was supposed to attract the Phoenix bird.

Regards,

Marcos

Hi Marcos,

Thanks. I just Googled images of Firmiana simplex, and it's not the tree I had in mind, although the way the leaves are represented on your bottle remind me of it.

But you have cleared up a long-standing mystery for me. I have been trying to put a scientific name to the Chinese name wu tong for quite a while without success. I have finally closed that loose end!

Regards,
Tom
