Title: Happy Chinese New Year of the Monkey
Post by: Fiveroosters aka clayandbrush on February 06, 2016, 05:17:43 pm
Dear all,
especially to our Chinese members, happy new year of the monkey!
Here is a bottle with a monkey, which should be on a tree, over 18 deers and a spider net.
Kind regards
Giovanni

Dear Tom,
very interesting! Are there some deer too on your bottle? I am asking so because the motif of monkey associated to deer and bees is a well known one, described in Terese Bartholomew book. Instead, I have never found a description of the Monkey associated to deers and a spider net motif. This is very rare, I have seen it very seldom, actually only two times I think, which are my snuff bottle and an hat stand that I have in my collection. Your bottle is very unusual, since it is combining both motifs.
Kind regards
Giovanni

Dear Giovanni,
I was trying to find my old post for this bottle, but was not successful. So I am posting the main views of it for you here. Yes, you are correct, there is a deer on the other side (but not 18). The spider's web can be seen under the tree branch, as well as bees.
The pine tree is there to symbolize longevity, I believe. And the two birds marital harmony?
A lot of symbolism packed into one small bottle!
Regards,
Tom

Dear Giovanni,
Thank you for the link back to that thread from October 2012!  I re-read the discussions there, and so was reminded of the interesting comments made by everyone concerning your beautiful bottle with 18 deer!
Regards,
Tom

Dear Tom and Giovanni,

Thank you Giovanni for what was indeed an interesting and informative thread.

And thank you Tom. Because of you I returned to that thread from 4 years ago, and then expanded 2 years ago by David M. so fruitfully. I really miss his quirky but mind-opening additions. The explanation of 18 deer being double nine, ie., 99, etc., with its additional rebus meaning, was amazing. And YT contributed as well.

I am thinking of trying to reread old threads. There was so much serious info we shared.
                             GONG XI FA CAI!
HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR OF THE FIRE MONKEY!

Best to all on the Forum,
Joey
