Title: Twin Gourd Silver Enamel Snuff Bottle
Post by: guest487 on May 12, 2015, 10:52:15 am

Since I am also a silver collector, I really liked the craftsmanship of this double gourd example, like the gilt filigree and detailed stoppers. It was one of my first purchases which got me interested in snuff bottles. The different enamel colors are nice also. The patina of the silver leads me to believe this has quite a bit of age. Anyone have an idea of age or era of this bottle? Haven't seen any similar to this.

Really a wonderful bottle Matt..

I will look through some books to compare and let ya know what I find..

I like it a lot and first impression is that it does have some age..

I have few experience on Enamel on metal bottles, but will vote it for a 20th bottle, could be made in Hongkong in 70s. That is just my guess , since I have seen same spoons from the 70s bottles.

This bottle is the nicest one among all the bottles you have shared so far.

Steven,

I think you're right about it being the nicest bottle so far. I was sifting through auction records late last night and found a sale of a nearly identical bottle. It would be quite the nice surprise if it's accurate since i only paid $60 for the bottle. The listing claims that one is Qing Dynasty.

Hi Mathew,

Thank you for your info!

As I said that I have few experience on enamelled bottle, will let other experts here help you out.

If its a Qing period bottle as the auction house stated( altho I have a doubt on the bottle on auction myself), Then congratulations!! ;D If its not, still a wonderful purchase with $60.00.

Can I ask which auction house the bottle listed from?

Steven

It was sold through Mega International Auction in 2014. Looks like they specialize in Asian arts and antiquities.

Dear Matt,
Steven is correct. It is 1970s, not Qing Dynasty, which ended in 1911.  So, if you consider 40 years "quite a bit of age", you are correct. If not, it still has 'a bit of age'.
Best,
Joey
