Dear all,

It’s been some time since I last shared a bottle. Here I’m sharing a recent acquisition of mine. A Ye Zhongsan signed landscape bottle dated 1927 Dingmao year. It’s the second Ye bottle in my collection.

Height: 56mm
Provenance: Previously from the estate of Anne Moen Bullitt, Bought at Adams Auctioneers, Dublin (2008).

Hope you all like it.

Best,
Samson

Dear Samson,

     Congratulations.
It looks like a very nice example of his 'blue period' [ Roll Eyes Grin], copying a palette of Zhou Leyuan.
For 2 examples by Ye Zhongsan the Elder in "Worlds", see A-4 and C-22.
For an example by Zhou Leyuan in "Worlds", see A-18.
Best,
Joey

Dear all,

Thanks! I’m really very pleased with this one! There’s an indescribable charm with these middle period landscape bottles! Now I get to see one with my own eyes!

From the calligraphy work, it also appears to be a gift bottle.

You’re right about the “blue” Joey, I love the color, it’s always soothing and pleasant to see! Roll Eyes

Now I’m going to find it a matching stopper.

Best to all,
Samson

Dear Samson,

Both sides have coral red in their designs - the buildings and pavilions have this colour.
You could use a pale coral red stopper, in coral or in glass, as a complementary stopper.
Based on the fact that blue, white, purple and green are Yin colours, while red, yellow and orange are Yang colours.
Best,
Joey

Dear Joey,

It’s interesting to take reference from the Yin/Yang concept. Thanks for the idea! I’ll consider.

Best,
Samson

Dear Samson,

That was how stoppers were matched with bottles "in the early days", as Y.F. Yang of blessed memory, would often say.

Hi All

Where do you find new/replacement stoppers from?
I have a few bottles without stoppers or needing replacement.

Geoff

PS I haven't contributed much lately but I'm still looking at the Forum with great interest.

Dear Samson,

Sorry to be so late to comment but a lovely bottle.

I meant to comment earlier but wanted to refer to the Treasury books before doing so because they have an example of a Ye bottle painted in a Zhou Leyuan style and wanted to see if the calligraphy on it made any reference to Zhou Leyuan and to ask whether the calligraphy on your bottle referred to him ?

Regards, Adrian.

Dear Adrian,

Thanks! Well I don’t see any reference made to ZLY in the calligraphy. It basically describes the scenery painted in the bottle, something like ‘mountains and clouds in the sunset, there are few villages around with no fisherman seen on the river.’ It also seems to suggest that the bottle was dedicated to someone as a gift.

Best,
Samson

Sam,

The scenery painted was really so classical. It was very serene and without a soul as suggested by the text
不见渔郎到。But I seem to see a blur figure in front of the boat (at the bottom left corner of the bottle). Can you confirm my observation ? Otherwise, the whole painting is really without any 生气 ( living soul ) !

Dear Inn Bok,

Indeed, there is no human figure present in this painting. I take your point about the “soul” but that isn’t the way I see it; instead, I think that human activity or “living soul” as you put it are not necessarily depicted through the presence of a human figure. In this painting, I’d say it is represented by the presence of man built architectures like the pagoda and pavilions.

Even if it’s just about the serenity, there’s something interesting to appreciate here. Don’t most of us have to travel away from people and human settlements to experience and enjoy the serenity G-D created nature has to offer? 難得遠離煩囂而心靜....  Roll Eyes Cheesy

Best,
Samson

Dear Samson,

Can't agree more with you !

Sometime I do like to look at a chinese painting without a single figure in it, trying to enter the world of the artiist as he presented the undisturbed scenery. A bit like when I read 陶渊明's poems.

Dear Samson & Inn Bok,

I agree with both of you, re.the serenity exemplified in good to superb Chinese landscape paintings of rural landscapes.
While it is also superb, the Xian Bridge part of the 'QingMing Festival' scroll, is NOT very serene.  Roll Eyes Shocked Grin

And Samson, when I thanked Curt, etc., for posting,  I'd simply forgotten that you'd posted as well.
No slight was intended. When I want to slight you, you'll know it. Roll Eyes Grin

Dear Samson,
