Hi All

Before I reveal more details on this bottle, may I have your comments and feedback?

Thanks.

Richard

Never seen anything like it... very beautiful and I can not imagine the work that went into this.   however, first reaction is that it is a recent art work.

Hi Richard,

An amazing bottle!
But, like Pat and George, I have also never seen anything like it before, and I'm talking over 40 years of collecting. On that basis, I'd say it's definitely recent. Unless it's not a snuff bottle, in which case I could be wrong.

Dear Richard,
I agree with everyone else's comments. Truly a stunning object, but I doubt very old. But it sure shows what fine objects may still be produced by talented artisans even today.
It may be Moghul, and then could be 18th C. or mid-19th, but could still be modern, if Moghul-style. If it is Moghul, I'd vote for Moghul from India, not Chinese in Moghul style. I have two of the latter in white nephrite, one definitely ca. 1760-1795, the second ca. 1760-1830, and there is a different feel in my opinion.
Regardless, I stick to my first adjective - STUNNING!
Best,
Joey

Richard,

Thanks for sharing what appears to be a stunning bottle.  I’m a little surprised that some have said they have not seen anything like it.  Maybe not in jade!   If these comments are in regard to the filigree type design we have seen this type of work in metals, lacquer, glass and ivory.   The integrated linked chain is not too uncommon in jade works of art, and I have even seen other illustrations of jade snuff bottles with such chain work.  Though have never seen such a chained jade snuff bottle in person, I do have a molded porcelain squirrel bottle that has a short silver chained attached to the stopper.  Though unusual, I have seen a number of chained stoppers, particularly in metals.

Now I notice there is no reference as to the size of the bottle.  Though this could easily be a standard bottle, I would suspect it could be a larger ‘table’ or ‘family’ bottle which would be used and displayed in the home.   As such it would be un-spooned and snuff could be pour onto dishes or I can see the use of a long elegant independent ivory spoon lying in a tray or on an embroidered cloth next to the bottle on the table.

So those would be my comments, Charll

Dear Richard,

This looks like a jadeite with carvings coming out of an old master.
Design and carvings are very intricate.

Cheers,

Hi All

You are all correct!

This is a very modern snuff bottle created by an artist from the Shanghai School of jade carving. It is one of the many jade pieces featured in the Collections magazine, June 2014 issue. Collections is a Chinese magazine that focus on Chinese art collection.

In this issue, the feature is on jade carvings from the Shanghai School, a renowned arts and craft school in Shanghai. There are many other exquisite jade pieces illustrated in the magazine but this is the only snuff bottle example.

This bottle is carved from a single piece of stone, chain included. In fact, as Charll pointed out, it is not uncommon to have chain included in jade carvings such as jars and vases, except that this one is on a much smaller scale. Although the dimensions are not provided, I suspect it should not be too big as it is unwise to waste precious material of such quality. If the stone is of a bigger size, it will probably ended up as a vase instead of a snuff bottle. Just my guess. I will try to find out the size and keep you posted, if available.

Once again, thanks for all your feedback!

Regards.

Richard

Dear Richard,
How much is the bottle valued at? I understand that it is not yours...

Hi Joey

Yes, it is not mine.  Sad

No price is mentioned in the article as it is meant to introduce the carvings from the Shanghai School but I reckon it will not be cheap considering the excellent quality of the material itself plus the good carving skills!

I will keep all posted should I am able to find out more details such as height, price, etc.

Regards.

Brenda,
While looking at it again, I noticed that the base is wider than an antique example would be.
Still, a real stunner. I'd love to see it live.
Any guesses what it would cost, Guys?
Shabbat Shalom,
Joey
