Joey,

The mark on the left one says ' Xian Feng ' and the right one ' Jia Qing '.

I tend to think they were 20th century piece.

Hi Charll

Thanks for sharing your bottle!

There are certain colour tone being used in conjunction with certain season.

As spring is the season when things start growing, green is usually used with pink to depict flower colour. While in summer, most flower blooms and normally red is being used, also to denote the heat from the season.

Yellow, orange and red are normally associated with fall as in the term 'golden autumn' whereas white is usually the colour for winter to signify snow.

Just my observation.

Regards.

Dear Inn Bok,
I believe that they are Republic (ca.1911-1935), because superb Imperial-style enamelled porcelain bottles were made then.
I used to own the mate to these in shape, painting quality and finial topped stopper, but mine had a superb Qianlong nianzhi mark in a double line frame, square with the corners angled (ie., 8-sided, with 4 long sides and 4 short sides).
I bought mine from Clare Chu, when she was still Clare Lawrence, and we were torn between it being Republic or genuine. Very quickly, we ageed that it was Republic.
I argued that it was after  1920, when the Forbidden City was opened as a public museum, and artisans could see genuine Imperial wares, and their marks. They could see but not touch, so they made reproduction marks on glass in raised blue enamel, when the originals had wheel-ground marks, filled with blue enamel. With Porcelains, I don't think there was much difference in the marks as a rule.

An inkstone bottle of rounded form, of dark brown colour with an olive green inclusion in the stone on one side.

The olive green patch incised finely with a landscape scene of mountain with a hut and a bridge. The reverse of dark brown colour engraved with a dragon amid clouds.

The design on both sides are shallowly engraved making it very difficult to show the details in the photographs. Height : 55 mm.

Hi Richard,

I remember seeing this inkstone bottle 'in person'. The landscape scene is very delicately carved, and indeed hard to photograph. You could try rubbing a little white chalk into the incised lines for the photo. It can easily be removed afterwards with an old toothbrush.

Hi Richard,

There is a lot for the eye to take in on this bottle. I can't decide which side I like more.

A tall slender bottle painted by Suo Zhenhai (索振海) from the Ji School, featuring on one side with farmers bathing their buffaloes against a mountainous backdrop with a waterfall in the distance.

The other side painted with children flying kites in spring. Signed and dated 2006.

Hi Richard,

I agree totally with Joey. There is something about Suo Zhenhai's landscapes that gets through to me like no others.
